Montana Morning

I am an early bird.

These days it seems it's because I need to catch up on work during the quietest moments but when I am free to do as I please, I still need to get up and at 'em before everyone else.

This photo is a case in point. Two years ago, on a ranch holiday in Montana (check the link for the Rocking Z on the right), I was up before the other girls every morning. And so as not to disturb my roommate, I would just put a jumper on over my PJ's, boots, gloves and off I'd slip to make coffee in the lodge house or as on this morning, would grab my camera and go for a wander.

Imagine his surprise, when this shepherd came over the hill and was confronted by a wild haired tourist, in her pyjamas taking photos of sheep! Zack, the ranch owner told me later that most of the shepherding in the area is done by Peruvians, another case of the pay/conditions being too bad for Americans to consider it worthwhile.

Anyway, I remembered all this reading comments on Karen's Blog over at Karbon Kounty Moos - check her site out for a flavour of the real Montana.

July 06' we went to a dude ranch in Wyoming. This was by far the best vacation we have ever had. My daughter at least once a week asks when we will be going back. They had a chef at this place that was GREAT. I would love to return soon.

Nothing wrong with pjs. During calving, I often have them under my insulated coveralls. That way when I come back to the house, I've only one layer (or so) to strip off before falling back on the bed.
